Ohio Amish

This pic is for Kara: not only do Ohio Amish GO to Walmart, this particular Walmart in Millersburg, Ohio built a FREAKING GARAGE for them! Hilarious! The parking lot just happens to have a connector trail to a hike / bike / buggy trail so it literally can be the highway to Walmart for the Amish community.

So there you have it! One would think Amish survive on just flour and yeast, but they need POP AND CHIPS! IN LARGE QUANTITIES!
This still doesn't beat the Amish teenager I saw at the pig auction texting on his cell phone. ;)

Liberal Amish!

My husband thinks the Amish thing is a scam and they have new stuff in their wooden houses and then make money selling us magical fireplaces :)

That was so nice of Walmart! Seriously, a trail to and from? How perfect for them! Sadly, last year one of our local Amish men died on the highway returning home after shopping at Walmart and Aldi :( They also had to euthanize his horse. A very sad day indeed. -Tammy

Wow. Walmart is most certainly going to an impressive effort to sell their pop and chips.

I didn't realize there were Amish people in Ohio (obviously I'm not from anywhere near the north-ha!). This is pretty funny- go Walmart!

I am so scratching my head at this. It is totally making me rethink all my perceptions of what is Amish. A cell-phone? Seriously? I hope he was at least texting in complete sentences whilst using proper English. LOL! You should post more about Ohio's Amish. Us Alaskans are fascinated.

Elizabeth, Ohio actually has the largest Amish population. One other interesting thing, at least to me, is that they allow their organs to be donated for transplant. I took a class on the Amish during college and have a few friends with Amish background, have always found them interesting.

Heather, that is sooooo cool you took a course in college about them! You should TOTALLY do a guest blog post on here about them. I know I could try but I would botch the story a bit because my experience with Amish is very one-sided. You see my cousin-in-law used to be Amish but it is the kind that LOVES that he is "english" now since he can drive them to Florida every year. LOL! They didn't shun him like I know some do.

I'll say this though, I am SHOCKED AND AMAZED at the percentage of Amish that stay Amish when they grow up. He is the only kid in his family that left and I guess the rate is over 85% for staying.

Well I took that class and it was really neat and then when I started googling to try and find a news article that would tell me who Ian's donor was the one that fits was a two year old Amish boy. I didn't think they donated so I didn't think he was the donor but I found out they do, so I think it was him. Timing was perfect.
I was recently watching a show about pregnant women in prison and one of them gave her baby to an Amish family to foster. I guess they foster a LOT of prison babies. Found that interesting too.

I live less than 5 miles from the aforementioned Walmart, and worked there for a little over 4 years. I'm no expert on Amish, but I do know some things. Have worked with Amish people, and my oldest had an Amish babysitter when she was younger. I don't know about now, but at the time they built the barn it was the only Walmart with a barn for horses. I will have to take a picture and past the next time it's "Amish Day". The barn will be packed with horses and buggies. They built the barn because they didn't have access to water for the horses, they had to bring it along. So now they have water in the barn, and it sees plenty of use. Beats a hitching rail any day. The local IGA has done the same and built a barn too. Rumspringa would explain the phone! Many have phones, and freezers, but they generally have them in storage sheds, because the aren't allowed in the home. They have lights, refrigerators, dryers, but they don't have electricity in the house, those are all gas powered. They eat a ton of crackers and cereal, many buy eggs at Walmart. If anyone has questions feel free to contact me.
