Sleep Update

Kind of unreal how long it has been since I've blogged about Blaine's sleeping. BECAUSE I HAD FINALLY FIGURED HIM OUT! [and when I say figure it out, the kid still didn't sleep through the night OR take longer than 30 min naps but it hadn't been a total struggle to GET him to fall asleep].

Then some weird funky sleep regression came and slaped me in the face. Last week he woke up 5 or 6 times a night all week long. Now this week he's back to 100% resisting naps. When I reached the HOUR AND A HALF mark of trying to get him to sleep, I surrendered and stuck him in the crib to cry. He fell asleep in less than 10 min. But then woke up 20 minutes later still looking EXHAUSTED. So perhaps we are at the point of trying "cry it out" again. It worked again for bed time. The normal methods weren't working so I stuck him in his crib awake and he cried and fell asleep in less than 5 minutes.

Sickness? Teething? Growth Spurt? Wonder Week?

Who the heck knows. But he's been tired and grumpy more than I'd like to remember over the last 2 weeks. It is weird he'll smile and giggle but then it will turn into a whiny cry. He just wants held 24/7 and has a zombie look in his eyes more often than not.

Again, I knew parenthood wasn't going to be a breeze but for some reason things like this just make me feel like a failure. There is a problem that I'm not exactly sure how to fix and all the books out there do nothing more than provide conflicting advice and make me question what is right for my child.

sleep is so hard! i'm so sorry. you are so right about the books- they all contradict each other.

any chance he's teeting? M has been teething (i think) which has caused lots of night wake ups and daytime grouchiness. there's not much to do, but at least i know there's a reason.

crying it out is hard, but could work for blaine now that he's a little older.

good luck! i hope it gets better soon!

You're so not a failure. What you just described is totally what LD's been doing too. It's hard, huh? Sounds like our little July guys are going through some rough stuff right now. I keep checking LD for teeth but I haven't seen/felt any quite yet. From what I've read a regression at this point is pretty normal. Not what you want to hear since you'd just gotten B figured out sleepwise. Fingers crossed our little guys work this out quickly. We need sleep!! And Mommy breaks during the day.

It's a never-ending battle, isn't it? I just thought today that most of my life seems like it consists of just walking back and forth jiggling baby. :P

I feel like I've read all the books and nothing works. You're doing everything right! When you need a break, he's safe in his crib and you need to breathe! Good luck! Hang in there!

We are going through the exact same thing right now with Addison. The girl WILL NOT have anything to do with sleep...she will scream and cry hysterically if you try to put her down for a nap. Like you said for literally an hour to an hour and a half of resisting before I give up and let her nurse herself to sleep (That seems to be the only thing that will work for me, she will eventually give in for Daddy) I'm hoping its a temporary set back and she goes back to sleeping better for me. Maybe when we introduce some cereal this month she'll be a longer, happier sleeper! (one can hope) Hope that Blaine gives in for you too!

It's funny, I just wrote a post about how parenting books suck because of the reasons you stated at the end of your post!

I hope you get more sleep soon!

Gosh, hang in there mama! Sadie isn't a consistent sleeper either. It is so frustrating, and I know what you mean about it making you feel like a failure. It is so frustrating! At least know you are not alone--it sounds like a lot of people deal with it. I try to just keep reminding myself that it is only for a season.

p.s. can you tell by the awesome redundancy of my last post that I am ALSO sleep deprived? :)

I definitely understand you when you say you feel like a failure when it comes to getting a baby to sleep (You are NOT...I am not either!). I really struggled with Lainey for the longest time and I admittedly didn't really read up on sleep training. I just tried to figure out my kid on my own. She is sleeping through the night now (until we teethe again I'm sure...BAH!) thankfully but I really don't have any advice on how I got her there. It was a loooong, tiring year! It WILL get better and you're doing great! :)

Oh, and naps are glorious now that Lainey is older. GLORIOUS!
