It is no secret that potty training hasn't exactly gone like I had expected. When Blaine was pooping on the potty at nearly 100% back at 5 months old, I thought "wow this potty stuff is easy" and figured he'd be trained by 18 months [the average age of potty training before disposable diapers were invented]. We started elimination communication at 2 weeks old and never let up, so he's known potty and sat on it muliple times daily for essentially his whole time.
Where we are currently: Blaine is naked potty trained but not clothing potty trained.
What's the difference? If he is naked, he has no accidents all day. He will go to the potty himself when he needs to go, do his business, and be on his way. IT IS AWESOME. I often walk by the potty and see pee in there and not even know when he did it. Makes me so proud of my little guy!
HOWEVER, dun dun duhhhh. That is where the happiness ends. I'm so frustrated with him because if he is in underwear, he just thinks it is a diaper and pees / poops in there without telling anyone he had to go. Obviously when we are out in public or when he is with a babysitter, we need underwear or a diaper and that is where I just am at a loss at what the issue is! We talk until I'm blue in the face about how to "tell mommy when you have to go" and "these are underpants, you pull them down like this" and "DON'T POOP IN THE UNDERWEAR" but nada.
I know tons of people who had success with "potty in three days" method of training, which has the kids being naked. NEED ADVICE: How did you transition naked potty trained to clothing potty trained?
OH NO! Well, awesome that he will go when he's naked but...yeah, he has to wear clothes. I wish I could tell you, but since my kiddo is still adamantly against the potty most days, even though she will use it, I have no advice. :(
What happens after he goes in the undies? I don't have any experience here, but I wonder if he had to do the cleaning up if that would change anything.
we arent 100% clothing trained with Ian but pretty close. Two things, beating him to the punch for needing to go, frequent asking if he needs to. The other thing was finding underwear he really likes, his case Thomas. So there's talk of Thomas doesn't want to get dirty he wants to be nice and dry. He will say how Thomas is dry and when he does have an accident he will say uh oh thomas dirty! I think they just have to be interested in it too. No matter how much you want them to if they don't have the desire yet I don't think its going to work.
When you figure it all out, will you come potty train Elle? :) Good luck with the transition from naked potty trained! I'm still not sure what approach we'll take.
Ian spends the day naked at Grandma's, makes life so much easier. Now I understand why Moms like the easy pull up pants for kids this age. No more buttons and zippers for Ian until he is much older. Good luck on getting Blaine to tell you he needs to go. You are so far ahead of the average age for potty training.
In the EXACT same boat with Avery. 100% trained while nekkid, but zero communication when in undies.
I like what Heather said though....
Sounds just like my son! We started EC at 4 months and i thought he would he trained well before 2. Nope! We had excellent success with poo but he would tinkle in his diaper or undies. We finally went cold turkey and things got much better. I know this is an older post but wanted to share my experience! Any luck staying dry at night? We are not even close on that!
